Locust Grove, VA — The greens were alive with purpose and community spirit as the DLW Memorial Golf Tournament, organized by Brave Hearts & Bright Futures, teed off to resounding success. Held in honor of Donnie Wedding, a beloved firefighter, drummer, and artist, the event brought together supporters from across the region to raise funds for causes close to his heart.
The tournament raised just over $20,000, with $18,000 donated directly to Virginia First Responder Support Services (VFRSS), a Virginia-based organization dedicated to the mental health and well-being of first responders, providing confidential non-judgmental peer support and referrals to mental health providers when it is deemed appropriate. No first responder who requests help is turned away, and VFRSS will provide training for first responders and peer support team members who request it.
Representatives from VFRSS were present at the event, underscoring the strong partnership between the nonprofit and the community. Sarah Thompson, Ph.D., LPC, who is the VFRSS Clinical Director, said “I am so thankful for the wonderful turnout and support for first responder mental health at the DLW Memorial golf tournament. As the clinical director for Virginia First Responder Support Services, I will ensure that all funds raised will go directly toward suicide prevention for first responders in honor of Donnie”.
In addition to supporting VFRSS, the tournament also helped launch a new scholarship in Donnie’s name. A passionate artist and musician, Donnie’s legacy will now live on through an annual scholarship awarded to a student pursuing college study in art or music. The first recipient has already been identified and will be announced in the coming weeks.
“This event far exceeded our expectations,” said Johhny Leach II, Brave Hearts/Bright Futures founder. “We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who came out to support the cause. It was a beautiful day of remembrance, generosity, and community.”
Looking ahead, Brave Hearts & Bright Futures is already preparing for its annual Christmas initiative, which will provide toys, clothes, books, and toiletries to at least 100 children in the local area. The organization also has plans for future fundraising events aimed at expanding mental health services for firefighters, offering educational opportunities for youth, and hosting regional sports camps to promote health and athletic development.
With a powerful blend of compassion, community, and commitment, the DLW Memorial Golf Tournament has set a high bar for future events—and ensured that Donnie’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift.
